Let’s cash up and move to the country – a better lifestyle for us and the family. We will have some spare money for travelling around New Zealand or even overseas.
The trouble is who is going to mind the house and the chickens, walk the dog, pick the vegetables…
House sitting could be the answer
My parents had a young friend Claire. She moved from one house to another house sitting among my parents and their friends. In between she stayed with an uncle. Most of what you needed was in the boot of the car. She was trustworthy and known, she got to live cheaply and enjoyed life as an itinerant house sitter.
Not everyone has access to someone like Claire to mind the house and pets, and there are now several Internet based sites that connect home owners to trusted house sitters. The House Sitting Company is one of these. They have been operating since 1998 and one of their strengths is that they are a 100% New Zealand owned and operated family business.
They have made it their mission to provide the “simplest quickest and most affordable solution for reliable pet care”. They have an induction process which means they only recruit the very best people. The owners themselves know the business and have over 100 sits themselves.
I have friends who traveled to Europe and they set up two house sits to start their trip, and then they got recommendations and ended up spending two years travelling and house sitting in Europe. They got the chance to stay in one place and become part of that local community – they loved it.
If you were thinking of moving to a new area, or if you are wanting to save up for a deposit on a house then perhaps house sitting is a way to try it out.
