Join our Junior Surf Programme
Tadpoles – Nippers – Rookies
The programme starts in November, and is held on a Sunday at 10am – 11.30am
We recommend that your child is at least 5 years old before they subscribe to a Junior Surf Programme. Membership information
At the age of 5, we believe that your child is more likely to have experienced lesson format and understand the importance of listening to instructions, which is imperative for their own safety.
We like you to be there! Your child’s safety is our prime concern and we ask that at least one parent is on the beach whilst the Junior Surf Programme takes place. Although we have instructors taking the groups, and lifeguards assisting, we like to ensure that there is a high ratio of adults present.
U14 Junior Surf Programme
Children learn the basics of surf events, such as- beach flags, beach sprints, relays, run-wade-run & boogie board race in the water up to waist level. Swimming ability: None needed, but some water confidence helps. Parents must be on the beach during the sessions- some assistance may be required.
Ages 7, 8 & 9
Children are introduced to competing surf events, such as- beach flags, beach sprints, relays, run-wade-run & boogie board race. They will learn lifesaving techniques. Competent swimmers will be introduced to surf swimming and board racing & rescue events. Swimming ability: Children can participate & compete in most events without any swimming ability. However 200m badge is required for surf swimming, board race & rescue. They will need to develop their swimming ability at this level to progress to the next group. We ask that parents are on the beach during sessions- some assistance may be required.
Children continue to develop from the previous group’s surf events, introducing more demanding events such as diamond & tube rescue. There will be more water based events, therefore it is important that they develop their swimming ability toward attaining their 200m badge. Swimming Ability: Children should be aiming to get 200m badge. We ask that parents be on the beach during sessions — some assistance may be required.
In this group the training is more intensive & will develop your child’s lifesaving skills. They will have the opportunity to be selected for the U14 Rookie Lifeguard Program. Swimming Ability: Children should be able to complete 200m badge with ease. We ask that parents be on the beach during sessions — some assistance may be required.
