Fashion Fiesta at the Ruakaka races
Celebrating its 4th anniversary the LJ Hooker Fashion Fiesta at the Ruakaka Races on Saturday September 11 is an opportunity for people to dress up for the races – whether they want to enter into the competition or not.
The Fashion Fiesta heats will take place between the 10 horse races, in a large marquee, set-up especially for the fashion catwalk.
There are five categories, which include Women 40 & Over, Women Under 40, Men 18 and Over, Young Teens Under 18, and Children aged 5 – 12.
A new innovation this year is a local design award, selected from those race day outfits entered in the fashion fiesta competition that have been designed by Northlanders.
The Supreme Award winner (chosen from the winners of the three adult categories) will gain automatic entry into the Prix de Fashion regional finals at the Ellerslie races next March, in addition to a $1500 gift voucher from Steve Haywood Master Jeweller.
Entry to the fashion competition is free – you can register on the day up till 11.30am or contact the Club for an entry form beforehand.
There is also a prize for the Best Hat – selected from the public – so you don’t have to enter to be a winner.
A $5 gate entry charge applies with the gates opening at 10.30am. The first race is at 11.20am Saturday 11 September

Tarts in Tartan – Waipu 2011 Calendar now available
Local Waipu women Sue Welford and Maggie Wistrand are on a mission – they have 250 Waipu Calendars to sell. So far they are going like hotcakes – this year’s theme is Tarts in Tartan and the closely guarded secret of who was in the calendar was announced at a gathering at the Waipu RSA in Tartan Week.
This is the fourth year they have done the Calendar – each year raising thousands of dollars for local charities, including the Waipu Museum. They have raised $9,000 from the previous editions, and aim to raise $2,500 from the current edition.
Copies available from the museum and lotto shop and will be on sale at the markets and in the street over the coming months. Many people buy them to send abroad so Waipu’s fame is worldwide. Very easy to post in an A4 envelope. Can also order from Sue or Maggie 09 432 1319 or 09 432 0227 – will post free of charge to NZ customers. email Sue
Fiona to ride for NZ in Canada
Our very own local Waipu identity and masters cyclist Fiona Southorn has been selected to represent New Zealand in Canada but only has just under 5 weeks to raise the $7,500 needed for the trip and because of the late notification to all riders there is no time to apply for funding.
How can you help?
Local personal trainer and fitness instructor Sharon Carroll of Smartfitness is heading the team of fundraising, and has had a great response so far – but there is room for more.
