Waipu Caledonian Games 2013
I did not make it to the Games this year, but heard good reports as usual. Here is Bream Bay News report

The massed pipers led by young Jamie Lymbourn of One Tree Point and guest drum major Grant MacDonald.
“We haven’t added it all up yet but we think the numbers were about the same as last year” said Don Ewen, Chairman of the Waipu Caledonian Society regarding the 142nd Waipu Highland Games held on 1 January.
Cyclone Evan, which brought rain and wind over Christmas had passed over and 1 January was hot and sunny. An estimated 6,000 people passed through the gates of the park to see the games. The Caledonian Society’s uses the profits to maintain the park and its facilities throughout the year. The games are its main event, so fine weather and big crowds are crucial.

The red bearded highland heavyweight Reubin de Jong tosses the 56lb weight high above the bar at its starting height of 10 feet.
The Waipu Highland Games are the largest Highland Games in New Zealand and host the annual New Zealand Highland Heavyweight competitions which forty one year – old Pat Hellier won for the 18th consecutive year and thereupon announced his retirement.

Annabel Thomson, aged 13 years, of Devonport competing in the under 14 years, Sailors Hornpipe competition.
This year the games were officially opened by the Mayor of Whangarei, Morris Cutforth, who said it was a well established tradition amongst many residents of the district to head to Waipu with a picnic rug on the first day of the new year.
On the tree shaded Scottish Country Dancing stage at the St. Marys Road entrance the indefatigable Elaine Goldthorpe was directing novices in dance sequences. Highland Dancing competitions continued throughout the day with tiny tots through to highly accomplished young men and women competing in flings, Irish jigs and leaping high in the Sailors Hornpipe.
Young Jamie Lymbourn of One Tree Point marched alongside guest drum major Grant MacDonald to lead the massed pipe band around the park. Waipu’s Ashney Were was the chief’s official piper leading Caledonian Chief Bain McGregor into the park.
People strolled amongst the avenue of Clan tents telling one another about their Scottish lineage and, dazed by the heat, they had to be continually reminded not to wander into the path of runners competing in races around the running track.

Winner of this year’s Tartan in the Park fashion award, Rona Cooper of Levin wearing the McLeod Tartan.

Tartan in the Park will be once again a feature of the Waipu Highland Games
Tartan in the Park will be held once again at the Waipu Highland Games on 1st January 2013.
Put on your creative cap and make an outfit which showcases tartan. The idea of the competition is to demonstrate that tartan can be a contemporary fashion fabric.
Categories: Men , Women, Boys, Girls and Toddlers with good prizes. Register at the Clan MacLean tent on the day.

ArtnTartan – Week 3 Tartan Week
Another fabulous Waipu extravaganza – as Huw Turner said to me yesterday, another amazing example of Waipu “punching above its weight”.
I attended the Friday night performance of ArtnTartan and it was spell binding, a tribute to all those involved – Helen Frances and her team, those who put the work in creating and those who put the hard work in making the event happen. Read more

2012 Waipu Highland Games
It was touch and go with the weather – many volunteers worked through the rain to set the Caledonian Park up.
But by the time 2 January rolled around – fine weather greeted us for another great Highland Games. There was a great atmosphere – I met some one guy proudly wearing his new kilt, there was of course tartan everywhere, and rarely was the sound of Pipes far from our ears.
The Tartan in the Park fashion parade is always great fun, and the fiddle competition have both become favourites for me. I watched the heavyweights and what a joy Pat Hellier is – everyone throws well, but he is stupendous and it seems so effortless as he picks up the hammer and throws it.
Well done to all those who make this event happen so well. It can only get bigger and better

Rosemary is very involved in the local community, running the community website www.breambay.co.nz and local events such as Tartan Week. She is also the webmaster of several Women Travel websites, and through her company Web2Blog she designs WordPress Websites for people and businesses. Tartan Week off to a great start in Waipu
First of July and International Tartan Day - Waipu had a perfect Northland clear blue winters day. Classic Hits kicked off the day at 6am with their breakfast show at Ynot cafe and a load of snow. Yes there were some people there at 6am, but not me! I waited to a leisurely 8.30. Classic Hits photos on Facebook
It was fantastic to see the Waipu Primary School - the whole school walked down to town – its the only time many of us get to see them all together. Many wore tartan, one of them led the Waipu Highland Band as it paraded down the street with the school behind them. Someone on the street commented “I didn’t realise there were so many kids in Waipu!”. Read more
Waipu Rugby at top of the Table
Waipu’s senior rugby team sits at the top of the table in its second division competition for the second week now, after beating City 38-5 at home in the wind and rain on Queens Birthday Weekend. The score was 5 nil at half time but with the wind behind them in the second half Waipu completely turned the game around.
Team manager Carl Pereira said one of the features of this game against Onerahi at the Waipu Caledonian Park on Saturday 28 May was that all players backed each other.
Next week there is another home game (in the Waipu Caledonian Park.) when Waipu meets Whangaruru. The game begins at 2pm. Team manager Carl Pereira urges people to come down and support this young team. The oldest player Andy Ryan is aged 50 but most of the players are aged from 17 to 23. The team is coached by Dusty Reader and Merv Kenny.
