Ruakaka Recreational Centre 24 – 27 January 2011 from 10am -3pm.
Local community circus mand Achmed Abman is organising this government subsidised event. It is free and you can come for one day or more but you must fill in evaluation forms. We will do all sort of circus games and tricks to learn as well as fun and laughter to take home or into the upcoming school year.

Waipu Christmas Parade 2011
Christmas Eve in Northland, there is no better place to be than Waipu, for the annual Christmas Parade. This year was no exception, and even a shower of rain did not dampen the spirits. Lots of people had dressed for the occasion and Gloria Mills, Janine McGregor and Braden one the $50 onl0oker prize (does anyone have a photo of the winners?? email me) See the photos below – if you have others email them to me and I can add them to the show!)
One visiting twitterer – @aaron_bird said the Waipu Santa parade was 10x better than the over commercialized city parades – it was fabulous!
The winning float ($500 Prize): a popular choice and was won by the Waipu Playcentre with their caravan of zoo cages.

New Flax Weaving Studio opens in Ruakaka
Nga Taonga Maori is a new raranga (flax weaving) co-operative workshop and studio, which opened on Saturday 4th December at 3pm with a powhiri and kapahaka in what was formally the garden and hardware shop at 458 Marsden Point Rd., Ruakaka.
“Our aim is to get something in place to pass on this matauranga (knowledge) for tamariki (children) so that these taonga (treasures) will never be lost”, said Hannah Carrington. Read more

- Waipu Community Carols 8pm Sunday 19 December - come early for a seat, or bring a chair and sit outside. Better still – join the choir to guarantee a lot of fun and a seat - dates of practices
- Waipu Christmas Parade 7pm Christmas Eve 24 December – the official start of the summer for most of us, and the only parade we know of on Christmas Eve! Dress for the occasion and you could win $50 for the best dressed onlooker prize. To enter a float - info here
- Waipu Highland Games 1 January: the gates open at 8.30 – march of the clans at 9.30 full programme and prices here from $15pp

Kayaking the Ruakaka Estuary
October Long Weekend – a big high was predicted, and a morning high tide – perfect conditions for a paddle in the Ruakaka Estuary and wildlife reserve. Simon Ellison lives in a small cottage on the estuary in Princes St. From this location he hires kayaks, we rang him and made sure he had a double kayak waiting for us. Read more
White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride to Mangawhai
Support the White Ribbon Motorcycle Ride to raise awareness against domestic violence
In 2010 the White Ribbon Ride will visit over 40 communities throughout the North Island with more than 200 riders taking part. At each destination riders will be met with events, rallies, sausage sizzles, forums and hakas – all designed to promote the anti-violence message in their communities. Any bikers are welcome to join the ride for as long or as short a distance as they are able – the only stipulation is that they are licensed and there is no wearing of any patches or affiliated colours. Markets are hot at present, people like to buy local, a lot of people like to make some extra money by having a stall, and they are great community events – you get to catch up with friends.
Latest news about our local markets
In Waipu we have the monthly Saturday market, the newer Sunday Market, the long weekend street market and the Antiques and Collectables Fair. In Ruakaka the Sunday market there celebrates its first year this month and two other markets have changed hands
