Christmas at Downton Abbey were the popular Best Float
Another fabulous Waipu Christmas Parade – organised by the Waipu Business and Promotions Group with support of the Whangarei District Council and countless locals. The summer seems to begin for me on Christmas eve as people flock to Waipu for the parade. The parade was a great success even if summer took a few more weeks to arrive! Scroll down for some pictures from Rosemary and Sue Welford
The winners were: The Waipu Citizens and Services Club who had a fabulous float themed on Downton Abbey. They won a $500 prize
The runners up (who won $100 each) were: Circool Circus, Waipu Playcentre, Waipu Primary, Radio Waves and Bream Bay Scouts, cubs and Keas.
Thanks to everyone who makes this event happen

Fireshows to Light up Northland this Matariki
Northland Community Circus Network are hosting some fabulous fireshows in Northland this winter to celebrate Matariki. They will be held in Waipu (of course), Dargaville, Kaikohe and Whangarei.
The Waipu Show will be part of the Winter@Waipu festival
6pm-7pm 26 June 2010
Waipu Caledonian Park
Donation/koha
The Show is seeking sponsorship so the event can be free to Northlanders.
Waipu sponsors so far include Whangarei District Council and Northpine – more are needed, so lets pitch in.
Every winter solstice I used to go to a gathering at Te Henga Beach. We used to rug up, and carry candles and dive into the darkness of the night. Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere is like this – cold and dark with the promise of new life. It is a fantastic thing to do.

$150 Maximum of 5 persons, Ideally,
students bring a digital SLR camera and laptop
to register pg@pgpix.com or ring (09) 434-4531
Peter Grant has been working internationally as a professional photographer for 19 years. His photography courses are designed to improve the technical skills of the students and broaden their creative horizons.
Students will also learn fundamental Photoshop skills and upload their photographs to the students’ pages on Peter Grant´s web site, www.pgpix.com |
The course starts with an explanation of the manual camera controls, lens aperture and shutter speed followed by practical exercises, handouts and a review of what has been covered.
“Once students understand how to use their cameras manually and why to choose one exposure over another, then the creative work begins,”Peter said. “Firstly they´ll be pushed to approach a subject in a photojournalistic way, shooting the same thing five different ways. Next we’ll watch something going on and work out the best place and/or time to shoot the action and look at how to tell a story with one photograph.”
The course will also cover portraits, macro, textural and landscape photography. Finally Peter will reveal some of his wilder creative techniques. |

Fri. 31 July Ruakaka Races
Where the Surf meets the Turf
Ruakaka racecourse is home to Whangarei Racing Club and boasts expansive ocean views and hosts nine meetings per season.
The racing surface has a well-earned reputation as New Zealand’s finest ‘all weather’ track. The reliability of the racing surface makes Ruakaka popular with trainers outside the area who base themselves here during the winter months. Access to the beautiful beach to train on makes the racecourse unique, hence its logo: “Where the turf meets the surf!”
11.40am-4.40 pm approx

For the fifth year, the June Long weekend will see the start of Winter@Waipu celebrations – with circus, markets and a Matariki celebration at the Waipu Cemetery
Bream Bay has its own Circus – and on the afternoon of Sat 30 May they will be celebrating their second birthday – you are invited to come and join in on workshops – juggling, acrobatics, tightrope and more and enjoy performances by Circus Kumarani from Dargaville, from the Whangarei Community Circus and from Circool itself. It will be held in Waipu’s Coronation Hall from 1-5pm. Read more
