Fraser gets a suprise on his 80th

Fraser Sim

Fraser Sim

Fraser Sim has done it hundreds of times – donned his kilt and piped in a special guest, or piped out a loved one at a funeral. Yesterday he thought he was piping in Trevor Vaile to receive a medal a the Waipu Firestation, but in fact it was a ruse, he piped himself in to his own surprise 80th birthday.

And he never missed a beat – as you can see in the You Tube clip.

Fraser is a much loved Waipu resident, descendent of Waipu’s original settlers, and teacher of the Bagpipes, it was a treat to see his smile and friends and family gathered around.

By some miracle the secret was kept and Fraser was surprised!

Go Fraser!

Pilates in Bream Bay

I had a bad back – sciatica, it niggled but I did not do anything much about it. I had heard about Pilates, but had not paid much attention to it. Last year I started going to Pilates Classes with Barbara Faust, and it has been amazing – so amazing I stopped thinking about my back.  However Barbara has been in Germany for a few months, and I am starting to get a few twinges again – and I think, its time to start going back to Pilates.  Lucky for me Barbara has just published a new timetable for Pilates in the Bream Bay area.  Come and join us!

Watch out for Wu in Waipu

There seems to be always something happening in Waipu – these two characters have been spotted recently at market days.

They are called WU and will be appearing indiscriminately throughout the summer whenever and wherever possible. I think you can call it street performance, it’s very much work in progress.

Who are they????

Tarts in Tartan – Waipu 2011 Calendar now available

Local Waipu women Sue Welford and Maggie Wistrand are on a mission – they have 250 Waipu Calendars to sell.  So far they are going like hotcakes – this year’s theme is Tarts in Tartan and the closely guarded secret of who was in the calendar was announced at a gathering at the Waipu RSA in Tartan Week.

This is the fourth year they have done the Calendar – each year raising thousands of dollars for local charities, including the Waipu Museum.  They have raised $9,000 from the previous editions, and aim to raise $2,500 from the current edition.

Copies available from the museum and lotto shop and will be on sale at the markets and in the street over the coming months. Many people buy them to send abroad so Waipu’s fame is worldwide. Very easy to post in an A4 envelope. Can also order from Sue or Maggie 09 432 1319 or 09 432 0227 – will post free of charge to NZ customers.  email Sue

Fiona to ride for NZ in Canada

Fiona Southern Training

Our very own local Waipu identity and masters cyclist Fiona Southorn has been selected to represent New Zealand in Canada but only has just under 5 weeks to raise the $7,500 needed for the trip and because of the late notification to all riders there is no time to apply for funding.

How can you help?

Local personal trainer and fitness instructor Sharon Carroll of Smartfitness is heading the team of fundraising, and has had a great response so far – but there is room for more.

Tarts in Tartan – Waipu 2011 Calendar

For the past four years  Waipu has had its own calendar.  Local enthusiasts Sue Welford and Maggie Wistrand conceived the idea and put all the hard work in, but get lots of enthusiasm from the community and while they have had some reluctant models, no one has said no.

This years focus is Tarts in Tartan and all are invited to the launch on International Tartan Day on 1 July at 7.30 at the Waipu RSA. The models each year are a highly guarded secret until the launch, so come along to find out who this years tarts will be.

Each year Maggie and Sue raise around $3,000 for local charities with the Calendar. The first year went to fund the purchase of some Waipu Tartan for the Waipu Museum.
