Fraser gets a suprise on his 80th
Fraser Sim has done it hundreds of times – donned his kilt and piped in a special guest, or piped out a loved one at a funeral. Yesterday he thought he was piping in Trevor Vaile to receive a medal a the Waipu Firestation, but in fact it was a ruse, he piped himself in to his own surprise 80th birthday.
And he never missed a beat – as you can see in the You Tube clip.
Fraser is a much loved Waipu resident, descendent of Waipu’s original settlers, and teacher of the Bagpipes, it was a treat to see his smile and friends and family gathered around.
By some miracle the secret was kept and Fraser was surprised!
Go Fraser!
2011 Waipu Christmas Parade
Another fabulous Waipu Christmas Parade – organised by the Waipu Business and Promotions Group with support of the Whangarei District Council and countless locals. The summer seems to begin for me on Christmas eve as people flock to Waipu for the parade. The parade was a great success even if summer took a few more weeks to arrive! Scroll down for some pictures from Rosemary and Sue Welford
The winners were: The Waipu Citizens and Services Club who had a fabulous float themed on Downton Abbey. They won a $500 prize
The runners up (who won $100 each) were: Circool Circus, Waipu Playcentre, Waipu Primary, Radio Waves and Bream Bay Scouts, cubs and Keas.
Thanks to everyone who makes this event happen

Join Critical Mass Cycling in Whangarei
After a winter break Critical Mass is coming back to Whangarei:
Critical Mass is a celebration of cycling. It is a collective and a colourful cycling festival that takes place in over 300 cities around the world on the last Friday of each month. An infectious, international social movement that articulates issues around transport, cycling, safety and sustainability.
CRITICAL MASS IS NOT AN ORGANISATION; Critical Mass is a spontaneous, leaderless bicycle ride that occurs on the last Friday of every month in almost every major city in the world. It is regarded by many participants as celebrations of self-powered transportation as opposed to a protest or organised demonstration.
There is going to be music, fancy dress (circus theme) and loads of fun. Together we’ll make our way through the streets of Whangarei.
Join us on Friday the 30th of September at 5.30pm in front of the old Library.
You will never bike alone!!!

RWC supporters lunch in Waipu

The Waipu Museum and the Waipu Rugby Club put on a fabulous welcome yesterday to Rugby World Cup supporters, especially the Canadian supporters, but there were some supporters of Tonga there too, and quite a few locals to welcome and entertain them and it was a great feed – very classy and very New Zealand.
The Waipu Primary School entertained, their kapa haka group has only performed once before (see them on Youtube below) , the Waipu Highland Band and Highland dancers, the local circus and local comedian Neil Troost performed before Steve Jones led off to board the 3 buses off to the Tonga and Canada game.
It was a great game and Canada won!
