The Ball is Coming – get out your Tartan and Dancing Shoes
The Waipu Museum Writes:
The “Glamour in the Gloamin’ ” Art n Tartan Ball, is being held:
Saturday 6 July (not the 7th as stated on the Flyer!!)
Please come along and enjoy this awesome occasion, and support the Museum and all its many community activities while you experience a night to remember. This Ball is about promoting our highly popular Art N Tartan Wearable Art Awards. We are planning an even better show for 2014, and we will be launching the entry form at the Ball.
This time we have changed the seating plan so everyone can see the stage, and will be using smaller tables. Platters for supper will be served on each table to ensure everyone gets a “fair share”!
Tickets are $45 per person
(or if you can get 10 tickets sold, it is only $40 per person)
Tickets are available at Waipu Museum.
There will be a ballroom dancing bracket to begin the evening
Then we have” lavish Celtic abandonment” with music from the Celtic Flyers - a great Celtic rock band who have entertained us at previous balls.
Ticket price includes supper, and there will be a cash bar to purchase your drinks.

North Haven Hospice opening shop in Waipu
North Haven Hospice is to open a second hand goods shop in the empty retail outlet (which used to be the Lotto Shop) next to the Waipu Bakery. It will be opening in TARTAN Week.
To avoid taking custom from the Anglican Church opportunity shop the proceeds of which all goes to charity, the new hospice shop will not be selling clothing. Hospice Shop manager Kathy McMillan said “We are expanding in Waipu as for a long time now we have been asked to open a second, smaller shop in another location and Waipu was chosen as the best place to be. It is very exciting for us and we really do look forward to opening the shop during Tartan Week”: the first week of July.
North Haven Hospice operates a large second hand store selling clothes and furniture at the corner of James and Robert Streets in the Whangarei central business district.
A team of volunteers will be needed to run the Waipu store
Contact Kathy McMillan on 09 438 1050
The shop will be open Mon-Sat throughout the colder months, and Tue-Sun throughout summer months. She said the work “would provide any new volunteers with a chance to become part of a loving, caring and fun team. They become part of a whole new social circle and make new friends – it can be a lot of fun. It is great teamwork!”
Hospice staff are happy to collect items now that will be stored until the shop’s opening. If you would like to donate goods please phone. 438 1050

Wendy Sporle of the Kiwis for Kiwi trust encourages little John Robinson of Mangawhai to pat a kiwi
before it was releaseed into the Marunui conservation block on the south eastern edge of the Brynderwyn
ranges
For the first time in something like 50 years there are kiwi in the Brynderwyn ranges. Fourteen north island brown kiwi were released into the 400 hectare Maranui conservation block on the south eastern side of the Brynderwyns on Saturday 13 April 2013 (article from Bream Bay News)
Speaking to several hundred people gathered for the occasion at the King Rd. entrance to the Maranui block, Catherine Hawley, representing the Maranui community, said that the land was purchased 26 years ago by a group of families and was covenanted by the Queen Elizabeth 11 Trust, which gives it protection in perpetuity. Where should the Cycleway/Walkway Go?
Last week I chaired a public meeting in the Anglican Church Hall which drew a great crowd, and some passions running hot for and against the proposed combined cycleway/walkway between Waipu village and Waipu Cove.
The end result of the meeting was:
- Overwhelming support for the walkway/cycleway to do beside Cove Road (safely and separate from traffic)
- This route would also point to the public access points to the estuary, and from here people could walk along the public esplanade reserves.
- The issue of public access to Esplanade Reserves and strips remains important, and should be something that we continue to work with as a community, and as affected landowners.
- This worthwhile project needs continued community support, energy, and funding
- The Trust overseeing the project will keep people in touch with developments via a newsletter and their website. Read more
