The Artisans Fair in Whangarei has moved to the fabulous new canopied Victoria Bridge by the Town Basin and will be on every Saturday from 10-3pm from October to April and all weekend in the summer holidays.
Along with the well established Saturday Farmers Market, this gives a great excuse for a weekend visit to Whangarei.
Walk down past Reyburn House in the Town Basin and enjoy the amazing new sculpture trail.

New Flax Weaving Studio opens in Ruakaka
Nga Taonga Maori is a new raranga (flax weaving) co-operative workshop and studio, which opened on Saturday 4th December at 3pm with a powhiri and kapahaka in what was formally the garden and hardware shop at 458 Marsden Point Rd., Ruakaka.
“Our aim is to get something in place to pass on this matauranga (knowledge) for tamariki (children) so that these taonga (treasures) will never be lost”, said Hannah Carrington. Read more

Lighting up Northland
Fireshows to Light up Northland this Matariki
Northland Community Circus Network are hosting some fabulous fireshows in Northland this winter to celebrate Matariki. They will be held in Waipu (of course), Dargaville, Kaikohe and Whangarei.
The Waipu Show will be part of the Winter@Waipu festival

Every winter solstice I used to go to a gathering at Te Henga Beach. We used to rug up, and carry candles and dive into the darkness of the night. Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere is like this – cold and dark with the promise of new life. It is a fantastic thing to do.

Just to confirm that the Old Library Building has been booked from 12th June-4th July for our season of Robert Lord’s classic New Zealand play Joyful and Triumphant. Which does not necessarily mean that those wll be the performance dates. But it will be a three-week season within those dates and subject to confirmation.Auditions are likely to be held at the Old Library early March and we will be looking for 5 women and 2 men. We are delighted that Kelly Johnson will again be directing.
2010 Waipu Calendar back by popular demand
There’s a whisper going around the village of Waipu¬† that next year’s funding raising WAIPU CALENDAR is well on its way to being completed. Yes, fantatical fotographers Sue Welford and Maggie Wistrand are at it again and the launch date for next year’s calendar – hopefully mid-October – will soon be announced.
Last year’s calendar – “Men in Kilts” was a runaway success and sold out very quickly. Sue and Maggie are taking pre-publication orders this year so if you would like to be one of those lucky people to have one, or two, or even three, contact Sue or Maggie on 4321319 or 4320227.
As to who will be featured this time…. well… that’s always a secret so watch this space!
Macbeth in Whangarei
Bogwood Productions will be unveiling their 2009 Shakespeare production in mid-September : the classic Macbeth , directed by Kelly Johnson and starring Jarrod Tuck and Natasha Foster in the title roles.
