Waipu Surf Club reports on a summer of flat water, sharks, boating and fun

Well what a magnificent summer, although we had no surf until mid January we still had some record crowds on the beach. Flat water, sharks, boating activity, swimming, sun filled days etc provided for a relaxing, fun filled holiday period where we again hosted our annual events.

Club day was again a huge success with great coverage from the Northern Advocate. The piece on Brian Greenway (sorry for setting you up Brian) was also great recognition of his long association and participation with the club. Julie, Rick, Angela, Joyce, Trudy – your organisation was marvellous and without our sponsors it would not have been such a success.

Golf Day attracted a field of 150 players with some brilliant (I shot 94 which was not too bad for one game a year) scores and lots of laughs. Greg and Laurie and the Waipu Golf Club provide a brilliantly run day where everyone went home with a prize. Special thanks to Paul Loftus who year in and year out cook the BBQ and dispenses the half way beers. Many thanks Greg, Laurie and sponsors from the club for such a great day.

The ladies ‘42 Below’ cocktail night is becoming legendary within the camp and an event not to be missed. Greer Flynn from 42 Below assisted by Josh, Matt and Fraser (the topless barmen) also need to be thanked for such a great night although the panadol took a hiding the next morning. Also a big thank you to Henry, the camps security guard, for assisting a lot of women home.

The return of the BYO happy hours is proving great for everyone to get together for a couple of hours and socialise. Please thank Paul and Monique when you see them for organizing the nights and the raffles.

The Up and Go Junior Surf Carnival and Rookie Challenge attracted some 800 competitors with around 2000 people on the beach with a rising swell.

This provided challenges for some competitors with our members featuring in a number of finals and winning medals. Magnificent effort. To Julie, Joyce, Rick and others assisting with the day a personal thank you for such great organisation and effort that went into the two days.

Our next focus is the New Zealand IRB Champs to be held end of March. As a national event the spotlight will be on us as a club to provide the same quality event we have organised over the summer.

Once again thank you all for your assistance in a fun filled Christmas/ New Year holiday period.
